Protection Master
What is a Protection Master?
A Protection Master is certified by London Underground Ltd. to provide protection for him/herself and for others on or about the track during:
- Traffic Hours, (when the trains are active)
- Engineering Hours, (when the trains are decommissioned for the night)
The Protection Master’s Certificate is endorsed to show traffic hours or Engineering hours or both.
The role of a Protection Master is a safety critical role.
What are the main duties of a Protection Master:
- A Protection Master takes protection of London Underground track for a given section and period.
- A Protection Master must plan and arrange protection
- A Protection Master must check certification
- A Protection Master must brief other people involved in the provision of protection, e.g. the lookout
- A Protection Master must hold planning meetings with the site person in charge
- A Protection Master conducts a safety briefing with the work party
- A Protection Master ensures that everyone keeps to the agreed protection arrangements
- A Protection Master must brief and protect staff working within that given section.
- A Protection Master must ensure the safety of the working party at all times.
A Protection Master must look out for trains, warn the staff they are protecting of any approaching trains and to ensure that staff working on the track take the appropriate action
Overall a Protection Master is the key person in charge of ensuring that all staff, (including the Protection Master him/herself), are protected from any harm from either moving trains or other mechanised machinery. The Protection Master is central to the work done on the railway network on the London Underground in order to ensure the safety of those that work on the track.
A Protection Master can continue on to become certified as a Train Master and a Possession Master.
